Jeron Electronic Systems: Six Decades of Innovation in Healthcare Communication

By Alex Strauss

In an era when many healthcare technology companies have been acquired by larger corporations, Jeron Electronic Systems stands out as one of the last family-owned manufacturers of nurse call systems in the United States. Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Illinois-based company continues to be actively guided by its founder Jerry Chesnul, who established the business in the early 1960s.

"We control everything from design to manufacturing to engineering to technical support," explains Myles Cochran, Marketing and Product Manager at Jeron. "That's a big deal for us. End users can actually get in touch with the family members who are part of the day to day operations of Jeron. We have short turnaround times. If there is a problem, we can fix it."

Jeron's journey began with the installation of apartment intercoms in Chicago high-rises during the 1960s. By the 1980s, the company had branched into healthcare communication, developing their first nurse call systems. While these initial systems were simple by today's standards, they laid the foundation for what would become one of healthcare's most innovative communication solutions providers.

Today, Jeron specializes in communication, alerting, and workflow solutions for healthcare facilities of all types. Their product line has evolved far beyond traditional nurse call functionality, though Cochran notes that "nurse call" remains the standard industry terminology despite being something of an oversimplification of all the ways that Jeron’s systems support patients and staff.

"Jeron provides solutions for any type of healthcare facility including clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals, and nursing homes," Cochran explains. "our systems are really about facilitating alerting, communication, and streamlined workflows between patients and caregivers and among caregiver teams to improve patient and staff safety and ultimately patient outcomes."

The company's flagship Provider 790 system is their most advanced solution, incorporates integrated wireless alerting and communications to mobile caregivers using in-house wireless and smartphone connectivity, touchscreen operations, real-time staff locating, comprehensive workflow management capabilities and bi-directional EMR integration. The Provider 700 complements the 790 for lower acuity applications while readily communicating with Provider 790 as a unified solution.

A point of pride for Jeron is that 98 percent of their products are manufactured in the United States, primarily in Illinois. This domestic production has proved particularly valuable during recent supply chain disruptions, allowing the company to maintain reliable delivery times and quality control. All systems come with a five-year warranty on products and parts.

In the upper Midwest, Jeron's systems are available through DTB Systems, an authorized dealer serving healthcare facilities across the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, western Wisconsin, parts of Montana, and Wyoming. As a systems integrator, DTB specializes in customizing Jeron's solutions for facilities ranging from major health systems to rural critical access hospitals while providing timely local service and support.

"There are a lot of folks who sell some of the same products, but they don't have the skill set or knowledge to know how to design and customize them appropriately," notes Jerry Weiler, Vice President of Business Development at DTB Systems. "We make buildings smarter. If you have nothing, we can pull everything together and make it cohesive. If you have something already in place, we can design something that makes it cohesive with what you have on board already."

Looking ahead, Jeron continues to focus on providing scalable solutions that can be implemented across an entire healthcare system's footprint. Their commitment to controlling product quality from design through implementation, combined with their family-owned structure, positions them to maintain their role as an innovator in healthcare communication technology for years to come.
